How teams got there: Nebraska completed its third undefeated regular season in the last four with a 54-15 victory over Texas A&M; in the Big 12 Conference championship game. Tennessee beat Auburn in the Southeastern Conference title game, 30-29.

The game: Nebraska led the nation in total offense (513.7 yards per game) and scoring (47.1). Key to the Cornhuskers’ option attack is quarterback Scott Frost, who passed for 1,237 yards and rushed for 1,095. Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning has received clearance to start despite a badly swollen right knee. He passed for 36 touchdowns and 3,819 yards in 12 regular-season games. Volunteer Coach Phil Fulmer has received a contract extension through 2003 at $750,000 a season.
