Two Projects Poised for Development

After years of planning, two major projects might move forward in 1998.

City officials are looking at a stretch of land along Interstate 5, hoping to either create a highly visible gateway to the city or persuade a major retailer to move into Laguna Niguel.

Also, the year might see the finalization of plans for a new commuter railway station near Camino Capistrano and Avery Parkway.

“One of the most exciting and challenging issues we have before us is the revitalization of the city,” said Mayor Linda Lindholm.

With a Nordstrom coming in 1999 to the Mission Viejo Mall across the freeway, Lindholm said, retailers have been expressing interest in a parcel on Forbes Road off Crown Valley Parkway, currently home to several businesses. The city is looking at whether it can rezone the area. If it can’t attract a major retailer, Laguna Niguel could also add landscaping and signage to build a gateway to the city.
