Marine, 20, Dies in Crash
A 20-year-old El Toro Marine died and another Marine from the base was injured early Saturday when their pickup truck hit a guardrail on the Costa Mesa Freeway, went airborne and landed on the street below, CHP officials said.
The Marine killed was Joseph M. Pauley, a passenger in the 1991 GMC Sonoma pickup that was traveling south on the freeway about 4:30 a.m. when it swerved from the road and hit a guardrail, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said. The truck flew into the air and came to a halt in the eastbound lane of Bristol Street, the dispatcher said.
The driver, 21, was transported to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for treatment, the CHP said. His name was not released.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident, which occurred after Saturday’s early morning rain, the dispatcher said.
