A man was in critical condition Sunday after a fatal accident in the city of Industry in which a BMW and a sheriff’s patrol car collided, authorities said.

The accident, which killed a female passenger, occurred just before 9 p.m. Saturday in the 16000 block of Temple Avenue, said sheriff’s Deputy Isaac Gonzalez. Two deputies--who reportedly were driving at normal speeds and were not in pursuit of anyone--were heading east on Temple when the BMW, which was heading west on Temple, made a left turn directly in front of the patrol car. The sheriff’s car broadsided the BMW.

The BMW caught fire, and the two deputies, aided by passerby Jose Manuel Sanchez, 17, pulled the 24-year-old male driver from the vehicle. The man was airlifted to an area hospital. They were unable to save the 40-year-old female passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Gonzalez said.

The names of victims were being withheld by the Sheriff’s Department pending notification of relatives.

One of the deputies, Mark Patrick, also was airlifted to an area hospital. He was in stable condition with a concussion and a deep cut on his forehead.
