City Will Offer Free Shakespeare in Park

The City of the Arts will offer free Shakespeare plays this summer in Estancia Park.

Members of the City Council this week agreed to waive $600 in fees that the Parks Department would normally collect from the Sirius Theatre Co., a nonprofit troupe based in North Hollywood.

Sirius Theatre plans to perform “The Taming of the Shrew” in June and “The Two Gentleman of Verona” and “Macbeth” in August.

“I really like this,” City Councilwoman Libby Cowan said. “I can remember as a child my parents taking me to local parks to see productions.”

While the council waived the fees, it rejected a request from Sirius for $5,000 toward production costs.

“We’re not trying to get rich, we’re trying to share our art with the community,” said Jeffrey Shaw, co-producer and director of the theater group.
