From Kurosawa to Gay Series

Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru” (1952), about a bureaucrat who learns he has only a year to live, will be presented Friday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. by the UC Irvine Film Society at the UCI Student Center’s Crystal Cove Auditorium. $2.50-$4.50. (714) 824-5588.
Out on Screen: Queer Film and Video, a new series of mainly short films reflecting varied perspectives within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities, begins today at 7 p.m. at the UC Irvine Film and Video Center in Room 100 in the humanities instructional building, at Campus and East Peltason drives.
Today’s screenings: “Boot Camp,” about a naive boy who follows the wrong guy into a leather bar; “The Ambiguously Gay Duo, #1 & #2,” about the adventures of Ace and Gary, a pair of superheroes; “Charlene’s Angels,” a spoof (starring Barbie dolls) of the 1970s TV series “Charlie’s Angels”; “Karen Black Like Me,” a genre spoof of 1970s horror flicks; “Harley’s Angels: The Opening,” yet another spoof of a 1970s TV series, and “Women of Gold,” a documentary featuring eight lesbians who competed in the 1990 Gay Games. $4-$6.
