Railroad Short-Cut Will Be Monitored

Officials are taking steps to prevent children from using a railroad bridge across the Santa Ana Freeway as a short-cut to and from school.

The children have been using the bridge--a dangerous and illegal route--since the freeway construction project recently closed the Santa Ana Street overpass.

To prevent any injuries, a security guard will monitor the bridge 24 hours a day, beginning Monday, to keep pedestrians and bicyclists away, Caltrans officials said.

Officials are handing out fliers in English and Spanish to warn students against using the railroad crossing. Children attending Betsy Ross Elementary School and other area residents will be directed to use the Broadway overpass, which is one block north of Santa Ana Street.

The Anaheim City School District also is adding temporary bus service for children at Fay Lane and West Street, officials said.

The Santa Ana Street overpass will be closed for about 18 months to make way for the widening of the Santa Ana Freeway.
