FISH REPORT
FRESHWATER
17. CASTAIC LAKE--Those fishing for bass in boats are doing well with a variety of baits, catching fish to about 10 pounds. Striped bass have moved deep and won’t rise again until the next trout plant. Some trout are still being caught by shore fishermen, however.
18. LAKE PIRU--Trout bite fair, with several limits reported, most by trollers using Rapalas or Needlefish lures at dam. Some bass, but the bite is sporadic.
19. PYRAMID LAKE--Lots of small stripers--weighing between 2-8 pounds--being caught on anchovies. Largemouth bass are also fairly active, biting on spinnerbaits and night crawlers. Some catfish.
20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing has picked up dramatically, with trollers using Needlefish and bait fishermen using night crawlers and Power Bait getting limits fairly easily. Jim and Grace Mericle, Santa Maria, 10 trout totaling 15 pounds, caught at east end on night crawlers. Bass bite fair. Dana Chatterly, Lompoc, 7 1/2-pound bass, on a plastic worm. Kelly Ripa, Santa Barbara, 7 1/4- and 6-pound bass, on white spinnerbaits at Cachuma Bay.
21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass fair, but the big fish are conspicuously absent. Largest, a 10-pounder by Kym Shull, Ojai, Castaic Soft Trout. Crawdads, night crawlers and plastic worms getting lots of smaller fish. Trout bite good at Coyote Ramp area, with fish to two pounds. Yellow and green Power Bait getting most. Some catfish.
22. CORONA LAKE--Top trout, a 12-3 by Bob Vigil, Huntington Beach, on Power Bait from shore. Top five-fish stringer, 19-8 by Pat Strock, Lake Elsinore, on Power Bait from a boat.
23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout fishing has slowed a bit: Only nine fish were weighed in at 10 pounds or more. That’s still better than anywhere else. Largest, a 17-2 and 14-5 by Jim Anthony, Yorba Linda, on Power Bait at Pump House.
24. IRVINE LAKE--Largest trout, a 14-pounder by Mike Fitch, Whittier, on an inflated night crawler at west shore. Best chance for a limit is along the west shore. Top bass, an 8-8 by Chuck Nelson, Anaheim, on a Spider Jig off Rocky Point.
25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout fishing good one day, slow the next. Still, limits or near-limits are fairly common. A heavy stocking Thursday has helped matters. Those fishing for bass (inflated night crawlers) or catfish (mackerel) are doing fair.
26. LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass providing the most action, biting on anchovies and, occasionally, a surface plug. Few fish over 10 pounds. Some trout.
27. LAKE PERRIS--Mike Gash, Silverado, 14-2 bass, on Castaic Soft Trout at southeast end. Scott Brownlie, Apple Valley, 6-2 bass, on Finesses jig at east end. Joe Massey, Temecula, 12-pound bass. Trollers fishing Needlefish in deep water catching an occasional trout or two.
35. SILVERWOOD LAKE--Fishing pressure is light, and for good reason: The fishing is slow for all species. A few bass are being hauled from the depths as all fish are deep.
28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--At Miramar, 490 fishermen checked caught 511 trout, the largest 6-4 by a trio of San Diego fishermen who netted a total of 15 rainbows on night crawlers. Murray producing similar results. El Capitan yielded a 7 1/2-pound bass, but for the most part, 150 bass fishermen found the fishing spotty.
29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout bite fair on inflated night crawlers and slow to fair on Trout Teasers dipped in Smelly Jelly. Some limits.

2. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--32 anglers (3 boats): 9 albacore, 4 bonito, 14 lingcod, 85 red rockcod, 60 rockcod, 200 rockfish.
4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--11 anglers (1 boat): 101 calico bass, 1 sand bass, 4 whitefish, 14 rockfish, 2 perch. (Hornet’s Landing)--4 anglers (1 boat): 11 calico bass, 9 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 9 whitefish, 13 rockfish, 1 sheephead, 5 mackerel.
5. VENTURA--25 anglers (1 boat): 15 sand bass, 129 rockfish, 55 sculpin, 39 red snapper, 29 yellowtail, 12 lingcod.
6. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--13 anglers (1 boat): 13 yellowtail, 32 bonito, 49 red snapper, 198 rockfish, 35 sculpin, 1 sheephead, 3 whitefish.
7. PORT HUENEME--19 anglers (2 boats): 20 yellowtail, 11 calico bass, 64 sand bass, 1 bonito, 7 rockfish, 18 sculpin, 2 whitefish, 1 cabezon.
8. MARINA DEL REY--98 anglers (4 boats): 60 yellowtail, 4 halibut, 57 sand bass, 12 calico bass, 14 sculpin, 1 lingcod, 1 sheephead.
9. REDONDO BEACH--19 anglers (2 boats): 2 bonito, 12 sand bass, 38 sculpin, 20 whitefish, 1 mako shark, 200 mackerel, 75 rockfish.
11. LONG BEACH--29 anglers (2 boats): 213 barracuda, 13 calico bass, 35 sand bass, 6 whitefish, 1 sheephead, 7 sculpin.
12. SEAL BEACH--15 anglers (1 boat): 85 barracuda, 14 calico bass, 15 sand bass, 25 perch, 14 sculpin, 145 perch, 1 cabezon, 1 bonito.
13. NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--12 anglers (1 boat): 7 sand bass, 1 calico bass, 6 sculpin, 2 sheephead, 60 mackerel. (Davey’s Locker)--21 anglers (2 boats): 10 calico bass, 46 sand bass, 2 sculpin, 2 sheephead, 3 rockfish, 30 mackerel, 5 perch.
14. DANA WHARF--51 anglers (2 boats): 130 sand bass, 79 calico bass, 39 mackerel, 1 sculpin.
15. OCEANSIDE--37 anglers (3 boats): 34 yellowtail, 4 barracuda, 53 bonito, 12 sand bass, 125 sculpin, 93 rockfish.
