One man was killed and two others were wounded Monday when shots were fired into a crowded van at an intersection in an unincorporated area near east Pasadena, sheriff’s deputies said.

A man got out of a compact sedan and fired into the van containing eight people at Rosemead Boulevard and Elma Road about 2:30 p.m., investigators said. The assailant fled in the sedan and an occupant of the van drove it about five blocks before stopping in the parking lot of an Orchard Supply Hardware outlet in the 3400 block of East Colorado Boulevard, deputies said.

A young man who had been in the van’s right front seat was pronounced dead in the parking lot. Two other occupants of the van were taken by ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in critical but stable condition. None of the victims were identified.

Deputies said the five other occupants of the van were taken to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple City station for questioning.

The motive for the attack and whether it was gang-related were not immediately determined, detectives said. Officers said they had not yet figured out how many shots were fired or whether anyone in the van returned the gunfire.

Colorado Boulevard was closed to traffic between Rosemead and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue while officers investigated the incident.
