Council OKs 5% Raise for City Manager
More than five years after he was appointed city manager, Kevin J. Murphy was given his first raise by the City Council.
Council members Monday approved a 5% raise retroactive from Jan. 1, 1997. Murphy will get another 5% raise on July 1, 1998. The combined raises will bring his annual salary to $146,535 from $132,912.
Several council members praised the job Murphy has done, helping the council achieve all of its goals since he arrived in 1992. With so many projects behind them, Councilwoman Norma Glover said she hoped Murphy would now turn toward increasing the city’s budget reserves.
Murphy had not been given a raise, due to budget concerns, since he was hired in 1992. In that time, raises for other city employees averaged from 14% to 21%.
