Olympics on Minds of Hebert, Kariya

Share

Goaltender Guy Hebert and left winger Paul Kariya were not picked to play Sunday in the NHL All-Star game at Vancouver. But the former all-star selections are headed there anyway this weekend.

Hebert will attend an orientation meeting for U.S. Olympic team members and Kariya will be doing the same for Team Canada.

“Just up for a day,” Kariya said. “We’re going to try on the [Olympic team] equipment.”

Said Hebert: “Barring anything unforeseen, I guess this means I’m going to Nagano.”

Hebert last month expressed concerns about being away from home for the first few weeks of his newborn daughter’s life.

The Ducks will be without defenseman Jason Marshall for two games when play resumes after the weeklong break. Marshall received his third instigator penalty for fighting this season and received an automatic two-game suspension.

Marshall, who fought Claude Lemieux in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, will miss games next Wednesday against the Florida Panthers and Jan. 22 against Colorado.

The Ducks sent rookie center Bob Wren back to Cincinnati of the American Hockey League so he could keep playing during the break. Wren made his NHL debut Wednesday and had two shots on goal.

One statistic to ponder over the break: The Duck power play has scored one goal in the last 47 chances with the man advantage.

And one quote to ponder from Coach Pierre Page: “We can’t go with the status quo. We’ve gone with the status quo for a while and it’s hurt us. We’ve got to get quicker and grittier.”
