The collision was the first of two accidents on the northbound side of the freeway near La Conchita on Sunday night, according to the Highway Patrol. It occurred at 7 p.m. at Santa Barbara Avenue. Both drivers were trapped inside their cars for about 20 minutes and had to be extricated, authorities said.

The second crash occurred at 7:31 p.m. at Sea Cliff, about half a mile south of the first accident.

Firefighters from both Ventura and Santa Barbara counties responded to the accidents.

Traffic on both sides of the freeway was at a crawl for some time while rescue crews worked to free the victims and clear the road.

The causes of both crashes are under investigation.
