San Gabriel Mountain Peak to Be Named After Ex-Mayor
A peak in the San Gabriel Mountains will be named in honor of former Covina Mayor Charles Colver, a renowned U.S. Forest Service veteran who died last weekend.
Colver Peak, a 5,511-foot mountain just west of Mt. Baldy Village, will appear on U.S. Forest Service maps in five years, said David Larson, the manager of the San Dimas Experimental Forest. Colver, 77, died Saturday in Portland, Ore.
“He was employed here for 42 years,” Larson said. “He was a great man.”
When Colver retired in 1988 from the same position Larson now holds, the Forest Service decided to grant him one of its highest honors--giving a peak his name. President Bush in 1990 honored Colver with the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award.
Colver was appointed to the Covina City Council in 1974 and was reelected three times, finally losing a reelection bid in 1988.
He will be buried at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Oaklawn Memorial Park & Mortuary in Glendora.
