Supervisor Wilson Will Seek Reelection

Thomas W. Wilson said Tuesday he will run for reelection as an Orange County supervisor, apparently without a challenge by former Irvine Mayor Larry Agran.

Wilson, appointed to the post in 1996, said Agran told him that he will not seek the office.

There had been wide speculation in recent months that Agran, chairman of the committee opposing a commercial airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, might seek the job to be a forceful voice against the proposal. Agran could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

In announcing his intentions, Wilson said, “Let me state once again, for the record and to send a message to any potential opponent who might be out there, as long as I am on the Board of Supervisors . . . I will not back down on my opposition to El Toro. . . . I am in this fight for the long haul.”

Wilson was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson when Supervisor Marian Bergeson, a former legislator, became state secretary of child development and education. Bergeson has endorsed Wilson’s reelection, as have 86 other state and local leaders and elected officials, according to Wilson’s campaign.
