Schools Chief Won’t Meet With 2 Trustees

Supt. Reed Montgomery, who has been absent from his post in the Laguna Beach Unified School District for seven weeks, has rejected a request to meet with two school board members because his lawyer has a scheduling conflict, he said.

This is the second attempt the board has made to restore communication with Montgomery. For weeks, board members sought to discuss his request for a paid medical leave, for reasons he would not disclose.

Trustee Eileen Walsh said she was “not free to comment” on the board’s next steps, but Trustee Robert J. Whalen said Montgomery’s long absence could hurt his ability to lead the district.

“It’s not impossible, but it gets more difficult as each day rolls by,” he said.

Montgomery was placed on paid administrative leave by the board Jan. 5.
