Coroner Names Man Killed by Van
The coroner’s office Sunday released the name of a Newport Beach man who was killed Saturday night after being struck by a van while crossing Coast Highway.
Mark VanSlyke, 61, who lived alone, was hit about 8:30 p.m. and died later at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, police said.
Witnesses said VanSlyke was struck while crossing the highway against the red light near Prospect Street, police said.
Though police are still investigating, they said the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, nor is he believed to have been speeding.
