The expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center could take a big step forward today as the City Council considers awarding a contract worth nearly $117 million to add a lobby and exhibit space.

“This is the heart of the expansion,” said Greg Smith, stadium and convention center general manager.

Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Irvine is expected to be awarded the $116.6-million contract.

The first phase of the project began last year at a cost of about $20 million and includes new storm and sewer systems and reconstruction of Convention Way.

The next phase has three parts: adding 140,000 square feet of exhibit space; creating a larger lobby by adding 280,000 square feet of public circulation and storage areas; and adding 170,000 square feet of meeting rooms.

Work will begin in June, with completion of the entire project set for December 2000. Proceeds from a bond issue are paying for the upgrade to the resort area.

The council meets at 5 p.m. today in chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Information: (714) 765-5166.
