African American Read-In Scheduled

Share

As a prelude to Black History Month in February, the Ventura County Reading Assn. is encouraging churches, schools and bookstores to host readings of works by African American writers Sunday and Monday.

This is the second year the group has sponsored the two-day local event, called the “National African American Read-In Chain.”

“The event is to bring recognition to the literary works of African American writers through the schools, communities and businesses in our areas,” said Dori Maria, a member of the group’s executive board.

Adventures for Kids Bookstore at 3457 Telegraph Road in Ventura will host a reading session from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday. Business, civic and religious leaders are scheduled to read aloud children’s books by African American writers.

Classrooms across the county will be reading works Monday from authors such as Rita Dove, Nikki Giovanni, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou.

For more information on the event, call Dori Maria at 983-0629.
