Motorcyclist Killed After Bike Hits Curb

A 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday afternoon after his Suzuki hit a curb and he was thrown from the bike onto a fire hydrant, police said.

Howard Osburn of Buena Park was traveling north on Beach Boulevard south of Slater Avenue at 12:45 p.m. trying to overtake slower traffic, Huntington Beach Police Lt. Dan Johnson said. The rider changed lanes, moving toward the right curb. At the same time, a gray station wagon moved into the right-hand lane, forcing the motorcycle closer to the curb, Johnson said.

The motorcycle then hit the curb several times and toppled over. Osburn was propelled off the bike and into the hydrant. Osburn, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Columbia Huntington Beach Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, authorities said.

Police said they do not know whether the car’s driver knew that an accident had occurred. But investigators said they have determined that the motorcycle was speeding, and that was a factor in the incident.
