Titans, Anteaters Receive Academic Honors

Nine athletes from Cal State Fullerton and seven from UC Irvine are on the Big West Conference’s spring-season all-academic teams, which were announced Tuesday.

Fullerton’s Reed Johnson, a sophomore physical therapy major, was named to the baseball team. Irvine’s Conan Vitale (senior, economics) and Andrew Wen (junior, psychology) were named to the men’s golf team.

Irvine’s Thomas Bohun (junior, economics) and David Chang (senior, mathematics) were named to the men’s tennis team. Fullerton’s Brooke Lacey (junior, graphic design) and Poornima Swaininathan (sophomore, broadcast journalism) were named to the women’s tennis team.

Selected to the men’s track team were Irvine’s Raymond Lie (junior, history) and Fullerton’s Stuart Gonzalez (junior, English), Adam Loo (senior, history), David Picha (senior, kinesiology) and Andrew van Note (junior, computer science).

Fullerton’s Sarah MacDougall (senior, sociology) and Erin Remy (senior, human services) and Irvine’s Anna Datta (junior, psychology) and Florence Sterni (junior, social sciences) were named to the women’s track team.

Other local athletes selected include: Mission Viejo’s Paul Day (Long Beach State), Jr., business, baseball; Fullerton’s Nicola Walsh (Long Beach), Sr., criminal justice, softball; Orange’s Sean Brocklebank (Long Beach), Jr., business, golf; Tustin’s Ryan Thompson (Boise State), Jr., international business, men’s tennis; Huntington Beach’s Tanya Futami (Long Beach), Sr., human development, women’s track and field; Huntington Beach’s Christina Neal (Long Beach), Jr., communicative disorders, women’s track and field; Corona del Mar’s Heather Bray (UC Santa Barbara), Sr., sociology, women’s track and field, and Huntington Beach’s Angela Winkler (Utah State), So., special education, women’s track and field.

To be eligible for the all-academic teams, students had to maintain a 3.2 grade-point average, attain sophomore standing and compete in at least 50% of their team’s contests.
