Five members of Florida’s 1997 World Series championship team, all traded away during an off-season payroll purge, were picked as National League reserves Wednesday for next week’s game at Coors Field in Denver.

Florida Manager Jim Leyland picked Moises Alou (Astros), Kevin Brown (Padres), Robb Nen (Giants), Gary Sheffield (Dodgers) and Devon White (Diamondbacks). They will join Edgar Renteria, the lone representative from this year’s club.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees, snubbed by fans in the vote for starters, had five players picked as American League reserves by Cleveland Manager Mike Hargrove. However, 11-game winner David Cone and Hideki Irabu, the AL’s ERA leader, were both left off, as were Boston’s Nomar Garciaparra, Chicago’s Frank Thomas and Texas’ Rick Helling (11 wins).

*

Matt Stairs agreed to a two-year contract extension with Oakland through the 2000 season, with a club option for 2001. Salary was not disclosed.
