Planners of the San Fernando Fiesta have arranged for an art show to take place at the annual event.

“That’s the main new thing this year,” said Patricia Lizaola, program manager at the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber is among three local civic organizations, nine companies and the U.S. Postal Service sponsoring the fiesta, which will take place July 11 and 12 at Recreation Park.

“What I’m going to show is a little bit of stone and some carvings in wood,” said San Fernando artist Juan Pueblo.

Pueblo, who works in a style known as “Mexica,” will also display watercolors and pencil sketches.

The 52-year-old is in charge of decorating the fiesta stage, where dancers and musical groups including Conjunto Primavera, Guasave Musical, Santanela and Los Incomparables de Tijuana will perform.

San Fernando Elementary School sponsored the first San Fernando Fiesta 72 years ago.

The fiesta evolved into a celebration that included the selection of a fiesta queen, a Queen’s Ball and the “Whiskerino,” a contest to see who had the longest beard.

In addition to the live entertainment, a carnival is planned, and organizers estimate 30,000 people will attend the fiesta this year. For more information, call (818) 361-1184.
