Thomas Edwin Wheeler; World War II Veteran

Thomas Edwin Wheeler, a World War II veteran and recipient of a Purple Heart, died at his home in Ventura on Saturday following a sudden illness. He was 72.

Wheeler was born May 10, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio. He was the only child of Lester and Treva Wheeler, his family said.

Wheeler worked for Shell Chemical Co., and served 20 years as a civil service firefighter on San Nicholas Island. He had retired from both careers, his family said.

Wheeler was described as a giving man who donated his time, services and money to churches, homeless people and friends who needed a hand. He was characterized as a devoted family man with a good sense of humor, his family said.

Wheeler was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Evelyn F. Wheeler.

He is survived by his daughter, Jeaneen Hitchcock of Las Vegas; a step-daughter, Judy Cox of West Covina; and two grandsons.

A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
