Program to Recycle Old Phone Books

With new phone books arriving throughout the region, officials are promoting recycling of last year’s model.

Pacific Bell Directory and the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation have begun a telephone book recycling program for Sunland, Tujunga, Burbank and Glendale residents and those in surrounding areas.

The drive will continue until Aug. 15 with telephone book drop-off sites throughout the area, including the field office of Councilman Joel Wachs at the Sunland-Tujunga Municipal Building, 7747 Foothill Blvd., and the Sun Valley Paper Stock Co., 11166 Pendleton St. For a complete list of drop-off sites, call the Pacific Bell Directory Recycling Information Line at (800) 953-4400.

Those who do not have a curbside collection service that includes phone books, such as many small businesses and apartment residents, are encouraged to recycle their directories at one of the sites.

Los Angeles residents with curbside recycling services may include old phone books with the rest of their clean-paper recyclables in the blue recycling containers.

Clean-paper recyclables include magazines, newspapers, junk mail, corrugated cardboard, cereal-type boxes, computer paper and phone books that are free of food waste and have not been saturated with liquid.

Service for organizations recycling more than 100 phone books is also available by calling Jefferson Smurfit Recycling Co. at (818) 841-9700.

Phone books delivered to Los Angeles residents will include an insert with detailed information about phone book and clean-paper recycling.
