TV Host Loses Bid to Save Buildings on Base

Huell Howser, the host of KCET’s “California’s Gold,” lost his final bid in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday to prevent the Long Beach Naval Station from being demolished and turned into new cargo terminals.

Judge Peter J. Lichtman dismissed Howser’s lawsuit against the state Lands Commission, which the TV personality claimed was wasting public assets by allowing Long Beach to destroy historic structures on the naval base.

Shortly before throwing out the case, Lichtman told Howser’s attorney, Richard I. Fine, “What you’re asking the court to do is micro-manage the decisions of the city.”

The city and port of Long Beach plan to build container terminals and a ship repair facility on more than 400 acres of the old base. A final agreement with the Navy was worked out several weeks ago.
