$545,000 Grant Will Help Develop Early Math Skills

Share

A three-year, $545,193 grant was awarded to Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Inglewood Unified School District and Math Renaissance K-12, an education improvement organization, to help local elementary school teachers implement a stronger math curriculum.

The award, given by the California Post-Secondary Education Commission, will be put toward a joint project titled “College Begins in Kindergarten.” The goal is to increase students’ ability and foster awareness of careers in math, science and technology.

“The biggest challenge will be taking a district as large as Inglewood and really making an impact that you can see,” said Hal Anderson, project director and associate professor of math at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Coordinators plan to develop after-school math programs for students and hold family math nights to teach parents to help children with their studies.
