School Board to Let Vacancy Stay Open

The Ventura County Board of Education has agreed to let voters decide who will fill the seat left vacant by the recent resignation of trustee Angela Miller.

Miller, elected to the board in 1994, stepped down June 30.

Miller said she is leaving the area with her husband, who has taken a job in Tennessee.

Last week, the four remaining board members voted unanimously to keep the post open until the November election.

Board members could have filled the seat by appointment or by special election. But Supt. Charles Weis said board members agreed that those options would have cost too much.

“The board decided it didn’t want to use taxpayer dollars to hire somebody to serve for two meetings and then let the electorate decide,” Weis said.

Weis said he expects the board to run smoothly until November, even with only four members.
