Lawyer Pays Fine After Arrest Warrant
One lawyer has already settled an overdue bill from the Superior Court after a judge this week issued arrest warrants for two accused of failing to pay fines.
Judge Charles Campbell issued the warrants this week, hoping to compel attorneys Kenneth Eade of Oxnard and John McNamara of Fillmore to pay fines for missing deadlines to file papers in civil cases.
Eade, according to court officials, paid the $300 fine Thursday and the warrant was dropped. McNamara, who owes $600 for similar violations, has not paid, court officials said.
McNamara faces possible jail time for civil contempt and the arrest warrant carries $1,000 bail, said Jeanne Caughell, deputy executive officer for Superior and Municipal courts. Authorities had reported no arrest of McNamara Friday, and the attorney could not be reached for comment.
The warrants come as county court officials are trying to collect about $90,000 in fines from 200 attorneys who have missed filing deadlines. Caughell said Campbell’s move is unprecedented for the county. Until this week, judges issued only warnings, not warrants, she said.
