One person was killed and three were injured Saturday when a big rig crashed through a divider on the Golden State Freeway near Echo Park and landed on a sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

The accident, which occurred about 12:25 p.m. near Pasadena Avenue, tied up traffic for hours, said California Highway Patrol Officer Karen Faciane.

The 33-year-old female driver of the big rig died in the crash after her southbound truck crossed the divider for an unknown reason, said Los Angeles city fire spokesman Bob Collis.

The truck hit a Chevy Suburban, seriously injuring a 21-year-old woman who was nine months pregnant and a 45-year-old woman.

A 41-year-old man in another vehicle suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, said Collis.

The collision forced the closure of the freeway as cleanup crews raced to remove diesel fuel from the roadway and investigators sought to determine the cause of the accident.
