A police officer who was on the force for 18 months died at a local hospital Sunday, a day after being hit while investigating a traffic accident, authorities said.

Officer Claire Connelly was the first female officer in Riverside to die in the line of duty, Police Department officials said.

A vehicle driven by an alleged drunk motorist struck Connelly and a tow truck driver as they stood at the site of a traffic accident early Saturday, police said.
