Chen-Olsen Claims Match-Play Victory

Linda Chen-Olsen of Granada Hills, the Los Angeles City women’s champion, advanced to the second round of match play in the 68th Women’s Trans National Championship on Wednesday at San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.

Chen-Olsen ousted Leland Beckel of Bethesda, Md., 4 and 3, and will play Kathleen Takaishi of San Bernardino in the second round this morning. The third round will be played later in the day.

Randi Meadows of San Antonio defeated Jody Duclos of Moorpark, 6 and 5, and Jennifer Hubbard of Plano, Texas, downed Cheryl Musser of West Hills, 4 and 3, in other first-round matches.

Ryan Wyman of Valencia shot a three-over-par 75 and is nine strokes behind leader Jason Hartwick of Sacramento after two rounds of the American Junior Golf Assn. boys’ tournament at Twelve Bridges Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.

Wyman has a two-round total of 151.

Justin Ohye of Calabasas shot an 81 in the second round and is a stroke behind Wyman.

Andy Brisbois of La Canada is at 154, with Jeff Coburn of Ojai at 156 and Dusty Morton of Ventura at 165.

In the girls’ division, Julie Park of Granada Hills shot an 87 and is 19 strokes back at 170.

TENNIS

Dexter MacBride of Newbury Park, Tim Hammond of Thousand Oaks and Steve Oliver of West Hills recorded victories in the round of 32 to advance in the Mercedes Benz Cup pre-qualifying tournament at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

MacBride will play Zack Fleishman of Playa del Rey, Oliver will play Dann Battistone of Palm Desert and Hammond will play Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach today.

TRACK AND FIELD

Amy Skieresz of Arizona, a 1995 graduate of Agoura High, has been selected Track & Field News magazine’s national college female athlete of the year.

Skieresz, who just finished her junior year, won the women’s 5,000 and 10,000 meters in the NCAA championships last month.

She had the fastest college times this season in the 3,000 at 9:12.31, the 5,000 at 15:37.77 and the 10,000 at 32:50.67.

BASEBALL

Brian Horwitz, an outfielder from Crespi, had four hits, including a two-run, two-out double in the seventh inning, to propel the U.S. to a 6-4 victory over Australia on Tuesday at the International Baseball Assn. World Youth Championships in Fairview Heights, Ill.
