Dressing for the Getty Is an Art

Share

Going to the new J. Paul Getty Center in Brentwood is an event--sometimes an all-day event--in itself.

So how does one dress for such a cultural long haul? With style and comfort, as these museum-goers displayed when they were captured on a recent sunny day.

Since much of the Getty experience happens outdoors as well as inside (one must contemplate the architecture as well as the art), sun protection is a must. Headwear for men ranged from the ubiquitous baseball cap to a rare straw boater. Among women’s hats were a wide-brimmed straw with a chin strap and one with an upturned brim and wide ribbon band. The most cautious also carried a parasol for good measure.

This being Southern California, shorts, of course, were everywhere. These art lovers seemed to favor the roomy Bermudas, pairing them with plain Ts or Hawaiian shirts so loud one was tempted to shush them.

But some aren’t satisfied with dressing like everyone else. True style arbiters are into theme dressing, like the young woman who wore a sleeveless, body-hugging dress that featured a portion of the Sistine Chapel. Now, that’s bringing art to the masses.
