An 86-year-old man was struck by a car and killed while crossing Santa Monica Boulevard, police said Monday.

The unidentified pedestrian was headed south in a marked crosswalk when he was struck near Thayer Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. John Haus of the West Traffic Division.

A car traveling west on Santa Monica at 9:25 p.m. Sunday hit the victim, he said.

Haus said there is no stop sign or traffic signal at the intersection.

He said it was possible that the victim stepped into the intersection when it was unsafe to do so.
