Unhappy Bruske Is Dealt With Quite Brusquely

Share

Pitcher Jim Bruske, anxious to get more work on the mound, will get his chance.

With the San Diego Padres.

Dodger General Manager Tommy Lasorda traded the unhappy right-handed reliever to the Padres on Thursday for minor-league right-hander Widd Workman despite the fact that Bruske is 3-0 with a 3.48 earned-run average and despite the fact that the move strengthens the division leaders.

In the new Dodger front office, there seems to be little patience with malcontents, regardless of the cost.

To replace Bruske on the big-league club, the Dodgers have recalled right-hander Mike Judd from triple-A Albuquerque.

This will be Bruske’s second tour of duty with the Padres. He pitched for San Diego last season, going 4-1 with a 3.63 ERA.

This season, he had pitched 44 innings as a middle reliever, not nearly enough to satisfy him.

While the 24-year-old Workman, who was 8-8 with a 4.67 at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, was assigned to the Dodgers’ San Bernardino affiliate.

Judd will assume Bruske’s role with the team and won’t be unhappy about it.

“I’d rather be here where I can try to learn,” Judd said. “I know I am not going to pitch that much, but it should be a good experience.”
