Sculptor and Painter to Teach Troubled Teens

Share

A sculptor and painter will collaborate to teach their respective crafts to troubled teenagers this fall as part of a yearlong program sponsored by the Anaheim Museum.

Sculptor Joyce Stovall of Trabuco Canyon and painter Laura Buelt of Garden Grove said they are raising funds to buy supplies for the monthly classes, which will be open to about 15 students.

Students will be selected with the assistance of the city recreation department. The student artwork produced during the classes will be displayed at the Anaheim Museum.

“We wanted to find a method to introduce kids to the museum,” Stovall said. “We also want kids to recognize the value of their art skills and give them an opportunity to further develop outside the school system and to look at careers in art.”

Stovall and Buelt, a lawyer and a bookkeeper by day, launched a joint show called “Exotic Creations” at the Showplace Gallery, 1631 Sunflower Ave. in Costa Mesa.

To raise money for their youth program, the artists are selling wildlife prints and decorative pots and ceramic dolls at the show. A portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase supplies for the fall program. Free open houses at the gallery will be Saturday and Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Information: (714) 540-6430.
