Valdes on Disabled List

A tough season got tougher Monday for the Dodgers and their chances of reaching the playoffs got slimmer.

On the eve of the opener of a 10-game trip, the Dodgers learned they will have to make this journey without the services of starting pitcher Ismael Valdes, who was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained stomach muscle.

Right-hander Mike Judd, who was brought up from the triple-A Albuquerque Dukes last week, will replace Valdes in the rotation and is scheduled to start Saturday against the Mets at Shea Stadium.

Judd got his opportunity because the Dodgers traded right-hander Jim Bruske, who was 3-0 with a 3.48 earned-run average to the San Diego Padres after Bruske had complained about lack of work.

To replace Valdes on the roster, the Dodgers have brought up right-hander Sean Maloney from Albuquerque. Maloney, 27, was 2-1 with the Dukes, had a 4.20 ERA and nine saves in 22 appearances.
