Schools and Farming

“Growers Fight School Site by Farmland,” May 26.

I am a sixth-grader at a Ventura County school. I am writing concerning the new school being built in Oxnard. I think that they should not build a school on a strawberry field.

Those strawberries are sprayed with tons of pesticides each year. After about five years, think how much chemicals and pesticides are seeping into the ground. Now to build a school you must dig up the strawberries and the ground around it, unearthing all the chemicals. Chemicals would spread throughout the campus, endangering and infecting many kids with disease.

The school they are putting in will be an elementary school with young and old kids. That means 6- and 7-year-olds could become infected with a sickness. Also, wind will blow chemicals that are sprayed onto another field to the school and its classrooms.

I am just one of the many concerned citizens of Ventura County.
