Everything but Flappers From the Roaring ‘20s

When I saw that Jim Murray’s column today [May 24] dealt with the Lakers and Jazz, I feared momentarily that I would lose my regular bet with an old UCLA golfing pal.

The bet is that Murray will mention Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Ben Hogan or a racehorse from the 1920s in any column. When he does, I win $10. When he doesn’t, my friend wins.

Fortunately, Murray somehow saw a parallel between a 1998 basketball series and Ruth and Gehrig.

My daughter may be able to go to college on the Ruth-Gehrig-Dempsey-Hogan scholarship.

I am thinking of asking my friend for a side bet, to be invoked when Murray goes through one of his really historic phases, comparing outfielders or golfers with Hannibal, Caesar or Robert E. Lee.

I find it entertaining. I was a history major.
