Bresnahan Quits as Coach of Laguna Hills Football

Steve Bresnahan, who coached the Laguna Hills football team to the Southern Section Division VIII title last season, resigned his position Friday, Athletic Director Dave Brown said.

Bresnahan, 48, will remain at Laguna Hills as a physical education teacher.

“This is something Steve gave a lot of thought to, but we’re shocked in the way this actually happened,” Brown said. “We feel like we are losing one of the best football coaches in Orange County.”

Laguna Hills had a 13-1 record last fall. Bresnahan’s record was 87-34-2 in 11 seasons. He previously coached at Lakewood High for four seasons and was an assistant at Long Beach State from 1984-87.

Bresnahan, who could not be reached Friday for comment, and Laguna Hills Mayor Craig Scott were embroiled in a controversy in the aftermath of the championship game. Scott criticizing Bresnahan and his coaching staff for not playing reserves during the 56-14 victory over La Mirada. One of those reserves was Scott’s son, Tyson, a tight end.

Brown said it was too early to decide whether to open the position for applicants or ask an assistant coach on staff to take the job.
