A Reseda High School freshman who was beaten unconscious by three young assailants who had jumped the campus fence is expected back at school Monday, according to Principal Robert Kladifko.

Nelson Gutierrez, 15, was attacked Thursday after he tripped and fell as he and other students ran away from the intruders, Kladifko said Saturday.

Students at the scene told Kladifko the attackers, possibly in their late teens, were yelling the name of a local gang at the time of the beating. Kladifko, one of the first adults to reach Gutierrez, said the boy lost consciousness and was treated at a local hospital before being sent home.

Kladifko said he did not believe Gutierrez was the intended target of the attackers.

After the incident, the three assailants fled. Los Angeles Unified School District police and LAPD officers did not provide further information about the attack.

Kladifko said he met with teachers and administrators on Friday to discuss additional security measures at the school.

But he added that he believed the attack was an aberration.

“It’s difficult to be a perfect island in the world,” said Kladifko, whose school has metal detectors and security patrols to help prevent violence.

“There are a lot of things going on in the world that we don’t like.”
