Police Offer Free Bicycle Helmets for Children

Seeking to reduce head injuries from bicycle accidents, the El Monte Police Department will begin giving bicycle helmets to youngsters who do not have them, officials said Tuesday.

Police Sgt. Ken Alva said children can get a helmet at the Police Department, 11333 Valley Blvd., and get it fitted by a volunteer officer. The helmets are funded by a grant from the state office of traffic safety.

Police officers will be issuing warnings to juveniles without helmets, and they will be required to attend a two-hour class on bicycle safety with a parent or guardian to avoid a citation. State law requires bicycle riders under the age of 18 to wear a helmet.
