Irvine Player Loses in Badminton

Top-seeded Ardy Wiranata of Colorado Springs, Colo., easily defeated Irvine’s Thanis Maneerod on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals in men’s singles of the U.S. Open Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.
Wiranata, who won 15-2, 15-1, will play Ruud Kuijten of Belgium, who won his second-round match over Jim Ronnyu Andersen of Norway, 15-9, 17-16.
Cindy Shi of Colorado Springs advanced in women’s singles, defeating Canada’s Denyse Julien, 15-6, 15-5. Shi will face Robbyn Hermitage of Canada in the quarterfinals today. Hermitage beat Kirsteen McEwan of Scotland, 15-1, 12-10.
Quarterfinals begin at 3 p.m.
