A birthday cake shaped like the future Disney Hall was the centerpiece of the “L.A. Alive” party celebrating Eli Broad’s 65th birthday Tuesday at the Music Center. Broad, who has spearheaded fund-raising efforts for the new auditorium for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, was honored with Andrea Van de Kamp, Wallis Annenberg and Mayor Richard Riordan for philanthropic achievements in the arts. The event raised $800,000 for the Music Center.

The San Marino Guild of Huntington Hospital presented a check for $43,000, proceeds of fund-raising activities during the last year, at a luncheon June 4 at Annandale Golf Club. The gift fulfills a pledge to the hospital to fund refurbishment of the Wisteria Suite, a labor / delivery / recovery room supported by the guild.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raised a net of $550,000 at its ninth annual “Culinary Evening With the California Winemasters” on May 16 on Paramount’s New York Street set. The sold-out evening featured gourmet food by chefs from around the country, California wines and a live auction. Since the annual benefit’s inception, it has raised $3.5 million for the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis.

The Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women raised $25,000 at a gospel brunch on May 17 at the House of Blues. The funds will support the commission’s community violence prevention and intervention programs.

The West Covina Sunrise Rotary Club, with 39 members, raised $55,000 for clothing for needy children at its sixth annual auction May 16 in Covina. Last year, children from 33 schools in West Covina, Azusa and Glendora received new shoes and school and play clothes through the Operation Santa Clothes program.
