A pregnant woman was killed and three people injured Sunday in the city of Industry when their sports utility vehicle collided with a freight train and was dragged 250 feet along the tracks, authorities said.
A Union Pacific train was backing up about 11:15 a.m. when it hit the car at a rail crossing near Temple and Vineland avenues, Lt. J.P. Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. It remained unclear late Sunday why the train was backing up.
A 26-year-old woman--who was seven months pregnant--was fatally injured. Her 3-year-old daughter was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, Harris said. The names of the mother and daughter were not immediately released.
The woman’s husband, Carlos Lopez, 31, and his mother, Juana Lopez, 59, were treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
