“The truth is out there,” has become something of a mantra for fans of “The X-Files.” But come Friday, maybe the slogan should be “The truth is up there”--as in up there on the big screen. The popular Fox television show about two FBI agents who investigate paranormal phenomena has been fleshed out into a feature film. Scully, Mulder, Skinner and the Cigarette-Smoking Man will all be there, along with a few new characters and twists. Now the question is, will the loyal audiences follow? 20th Century Fox wants to believe. . . .

Disney’s 36th animated feature film, “Mulan,” is an epic tale of a brave young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in the war against the invading Huns. Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, B.D. Wong and Harvey Fierstein lend their voices. Also this weekend, in celebration of the film’s opening, Disneyland premieres its new “Mulan Parade.” Club Disney unveils a new play area designed to look like an ancient Chinese village, where children can experience “Mulan” firsthand.

11am: Popular Culture

Photographs, images and cool artifacts depict the always-happenin’ history and culture of surfing the California coast in “On the Surface: California Surf Culture,” a new exhibition opening at the Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro. An opening reception from 2-4 p.m. Sunday will feature live music, clothing, a sign-up booth for free surf lessons and a booth with representatives from the nonprofit coastal cleanup organization Surf Rider Foundation.

6:30pm: Jazz

Singer-keyboardist-composer Patrice Rushen, accompanied by drummer Ndugu Chancler, inaugurates the 3rd Annual Westwood Jazz at the Hammer, a series of six free Friday concerts in the courtyard of UCLA at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center.

2pm: Crafts

Handcrafted functional and decorative artworks designed by more than 240 artisans will be included in the annual Contemporary Crafts Market at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. This weekend’s market will include ceramic works, furniture, glass pieces, jewelry and fiber arts as well as lectures by furniture designer Stephanie Occhipinti Karr and basket artist Lois Rainwater.

Timbales master Tito Puente came out of the Machito band and New York’s Afro-Cuban scene of the ‘40s to become “El Rey,” the King of Latin jazz. Now at 75, the sprightly percussionist shows no sign of slowing down, something that will be eminently apparent during this two-night run.
