Inglewood Unified School District was selected to receive $350,000 from the Student Academic Partnership Grant, officials announced Wednesday.

“This money comes to us like manna from heaven,” said McKinley Nash Sr., superintendent of schools for the district.

The money will be used to train volunteers from various agencies to provide tutorial help and after-school enrichment programs in elementary and middle schools.

“These people would spend time with the kids during the hours between 3 and 8 p.m.,” said Nash. “These are the hours when the worst crimes involving adolescents and young people are committed.”

Nash said the district would put the money to use immediately and that at least 10 schools have been identified as potential recipients.

Inglewood was one of 22 school districts selected out of 140 applicants to receive the grant.
