Jim Leyritz, a former World Series hero who was bothered because of his lack of playing time in Boston, was traded Sunday from the Red Sox to the San Diego Padres.

The Red Sox sent Leyritz and minor league outfielder Ethan Faggett to the Padres for right-handed pitchers Carlos Reyes and Dario Veras and catcher Mandy Romero.

The trade was announced shortly after the Padres’ 5-1 victory at San Francisco.

San Diego Manager Bruce Bochy said he expected Leyritz to join the Padres today in Seattle for an interleague game against the Mariners.

Leyritz, 34, is batting .287 with eight home runs and 24 runs batted in. He has played in 52 games, but has only 129 at-bats. He has mostly been a designated hitter.

His three-run homer in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series gave the New York Yankees the momentum to go ahead and beat the Atlanta Braves.
