Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys couldn’t shake the medalist jinx at the California Amateur Championship, and was beaten by Ed Cuff Jr. of Temecula, 1-up, Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Steinberg, four-time Southern California Amateur champion, was trying to become only the 10th medalist in the 87-year history of the tournament to win.

Bobby Rodger, a sophomore-to-be at Pepperdine, defeated second-seeded Andy Miller of Napa, 1-up, and advanced to today’s quarterfinal round.

Anne Lee of Northridge, within two strokes of leader Angela Rho of Fullerton entering the final round, shot a closing-round 77 on Thursday and finished fourth in the American Junior Golf Assn. tournament at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Lee, a senior-to-be at Notre Dame High, had rounds of 72-73-77--222, 11 strokes behind Rho, who shot 75-68-68--211 to win. Julie Park of Granada Hills closed with a 76 and finished at 224, tied for eighth.

In the boys’ division, Justin Ohye of Calabasas shot 223 and tied for 27th. David Oh of Cerritos shot 209 to win.

BASEBALL

Adam Schulhofer, a former All-City outfielder at Canoga Park High who played at UCLA, has been selected coach at Canyon High. Schulhofer coached Canyon’s junior varsity to the Foothill League title this season. He also served as a varsity assistant to Scott Willis, who resigned.

BASKETBALL

Russell Lakey scored 18 points and Anthony Naylor added 14 as Harvard-Westlake rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Muir, 58-54, in the championship game of the Valley Sports Foundation Summer Basketball tournament Thursday in Studio City.

In the girls’ final, Alemany defeated Westlake, 52-46, behind Kate Beckler’s 17 points. Tawny Thorpe had 20 points for Westlake.

SOCCER

The Valley United Stars defeated the New Mexico Magic, 5-1, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the girls’ under-14 Far West regional tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.

Diana Sanguinetti, Celisse Hayden, Allison Stone, Jill Oakes and Kelly Lavery scored for the Stars (4-0), who play the Arizona Golden Eagles in a semifinal game today.

Jennifer Cowper has resigned as Moorpark College women’s coach, Moorpark athletic coordinator John Keever said.

Keever said Cowper, 27, stepped down after less than a year because her fiance has accepted a job in Idaho. Keever said a part-time emergency hire will be made for the upcoming season and a full-time hire will likely be made next spring.

WRESTLING

Anthony Thomas (171 pounds) and Edward Lemus (119) of El Camino Real High were undefeated in three matches and placed first in the L.A. Watts Summer Games last weekend.

Salvador Flores of El Camino Real (152) and Andres Ojeda of Chatsworth (160) placed second. Jamar Cargo (215) of El Camino Real placed third and Edward Hernandez (130) of El Camino Real was fifth.
