League Saves Grays Harbor, for Now

Share

Owners of the Grays Harbor Gulls of the independent Western Baseball League announced Friday that the team would cease operations immediately. But the league held an emergency meeting later in the day and agreed to cooperatively fund the team until the July 12-14 all-star break.

According to Paula Pyers, principal owner and general manager of the Mission Viejo Vigilantes, the league will meet Wednesday in hopes of finding a way to keep the team going in the second half.

Home Town Baseball LLC, a group of local business people that run the Gulls, said they can no longer function without going into debt.

The Gulls, who are located in Hoquiam, Wash., began operation in 1995. They play in Olympic Stadium, which was built in 1932 and has a capacity of 7,500. The owners, who had hoped to have 700 season-ticket holders this season but have only 369, said sponsorship money and attendance were well below expectations.
