Glavine Helps Himself in Win
Tom Glavine has caught Greg Maddux on the mound. Now he’s trying to catch his teammate with his bat.
He came up big on both counts Sunday.
Glavine joined Maddux as the only 11-game winners in the National League and matched a career-high by driving in three runs with two hits as the Atlanta Braves overpowered the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-3.
Glavine (11-3) gave up five hits, walked one and struck out one in seven innings. Maddux (11-2) beat the Blue Jays, 2-0, on Saturday night.
“I’m coming after him,” said a grinning Glavine as he pointed across the dressing room at Maddux’s stall. “There’s no question about that. I’m not laying down in terms of hitting.”
Glavine, who entered the game batting .133, raised his average to .182 (six for 33). Maddux is batting .302 (13 for 43).
“My hitting is just an opportunity to help out the team and today it worked out,” Glavine said. “It was fun, but I was just fortunate to add to what the other guys had done.”
Randall Simon, recalled from the minors Sunday a day after knocking in 10 runs in a triple-A game, also had three runs batted in, going two for four. He drove in a run with a single in the first, added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the eighth.
“It’s beautiful,” said Simon, who was one of the final cuts during the spring after batting .308 last season at Richmond with 14 homers and 102 RBIs.
“It was really exciting to have a game like last night,” Simon said. “Manager Bobby Cox told me I was in the lineup today and I told him I was ready to go.”
Shawn Green hit two solo home runs for the Blue Jays, his 14th and 15th of the season.
